Flights from North America currently *very* expensive

I thought I'd start looking at options for the Raincity Studios team early this year, so we've started planning our trip.

Right now, it looks like flights from Vancouver are around $2200 to Budapest. This is approximately double what flights to Europe usually are.

Are other people from North America seeing different prices? I'd appreciate pointers to cheap deals or alternate routing (plane then train?).

If there are 100s of people flying, we might look into some sort of charter flight options...I've never done this before, so I have no idea how possible this is.

If prices stay at this level, I'm guessing it will severely limit attendance from North America...

$1500

Farecast.com and Kayak.com offer prices starting slightly below $1500 (Vancouver-Budapest round trip), and it seems the same for round trips to bigger hubs in Europe I tried like (Vancouver to) Berlin or Brussels.

Not so much

OK, I just looked at Kayak. Don't know if this link will work: http://www.kayak.com/s/flights.jsp?searchid=ROk6hTGUNYCMQ3R0h3_cdw

The flights in the ~$1600 range have two stops and take 30 hours !!!

It looks like the majority of the more reasonable 15 - 16 hour flights are around ~$2100.

Hmmm...looks like both San Francisco and Toronto have slightly more reasonable fares in the ~$1700 range.

In any case, if someone finds good deals from Vancouver / Seattle, please post!

Note: I'm looking at time frames that are Sun 24 Aug 2008 – Sun 31 Aug 2008.

lake balaton airport

there are flights from Luton Airport (north of London) to Lake Balaton airport in Hungary. not sure if there is a rail service from there to the conference, but its worth checking out.

http://www.flybalaton.com/

flying that route might help with bringing the cost from North America down.

Timing

I know timing of these events is difficult, especially at a venue which might otherwise be in use during times other than the summer, but scheduling a international conference during peak travel times will result in exorbitant travel costs.

Barcelona was great, and part of what made it such an awesome experience was the huge cultural festival occurring at the same time, however this resulted in hotels (which the week before or after were 100 Euros a night) being 400 Euros a night.

I just hope that DrupalCon Vancouver is not scheduled during the Olympics in 2010 ;-)

Charter flights are expensive

I just did a quick search on Charter flights and my back of the napkin calculation comes out to about $10,000 per person at it's cheapest. Don't think it's quite in the reasonable range.

Monday is better

It looks like you can get slightly cheaper flights on Monday 25 than on Sunday 24. Best prices are on the 13th :)

US - London - Budapest

London should be one of the cheapest destinations in Europe when traveling from the US. I'd guess there are some airlines flying to Budapest from both Gatwick and Heathrow.

The cheapest flights however leave from Stansted, which means you'll have to change airports. But if you have contacts in London, you may want to spend some time there anyway before continuing onto Budapest.

Speaking of cheap european airlines... ;)

London - Budapest is between

London - Budapest is between $200-300 so you might well save doing like that. Like Ximo says, 'London' airports can be any one of four, and they can be 40 miles from each other, so bear that in mind for transfers.

West Jet to Toronto - Toronto to Budapest

Hey Boris,

I just booked this week and it was about $1,200 all in round trip out of Toronto.

So maybe you can westjet to T.O. and zoom from there on Malev.

Of course I was flexibile with my departure and return dates - taking a mini vacation and time out to visit friends in Hungary.

I am checking prices to Vancouver around that time (one way ;) ) and I saw unbelievably low prices at flyglobespan.zom and flyzoom.zom . I think I will fly Budapest-Dublin-Vancouver with flyglobespan.zom.
