Food Allergy Help Needed

I have very severe food allergies. One of the things I wanted to get for the trip is a card with special instructions printed onto it in Magyar. The problem is that the Web site I was planning on using (www.AllergyTranslation.com) is in need of a translator to add what I need. If you are able to help out with this I would /really/ appreciate a hand (and Kyle would really appreciate a translator). Please let me know if you can help out!

I have a severe allergy to nuts and have to carry adrenaline everywhere with me. Yellowcross in the UK have some allergy cards available in Hungarian - http://www.yellowcross.co.uk/products/7

Thanks for the AllergyTranslation.com link though - looks useful! Please let me know if they sort out a Hungarian translator.

Darn! Although that link is good, they want to ship me bits of paper. :( I'd love to find a solution that I can print out (and can afford to "lose" to kitchen staff). Hopefully there's someone reading this who can help with the translation!! Most of it is a simple matter of translating the names of fruits and veg (at least for me). *fingers crossed*

I'm also allergic

I'm also allergic, to nuts and seafood. But I thought I'd just make my own card and having someone translate it to Magyar. None of the allergy card services have the word seafood, and I don't really want to go through the hassle of ordering from abroad.

If somebody would be so kind to translate the following into Magyar, I'd be happy to buy you a beer in Szeged ;)

Due to my food allergies, I cannot eat the following:

  • Nuts and seeds
  • Seafood

Please advice the kitchen staff that I could experience an allergic reaction if I eat these foods directly or from cross contamination.

Thank you very much for your understanding and co-operation.

Some Key Phrases

I am allergic:
allergiás vagyok

Life Threatening:
életveszélyes

I am not allowed to eat insert food name:
Nem szabad nekem eni insert hungarian food name
(My spelling or grammar may be a bit off on that one - but you'd be understood - can someone else comment)

Nut:
Dio (I think thats the most generic 'nut' word, but dio
also is specifically 'walnut')

Nuts:
Diok

Hazelnut:
mogyoró

Peanut:
földimogyoró

Seed:
Mag

Seeds:
Magok

I can't remember the exact phrase for 'sea food', But its "Tengeri somethingorother". 'of the sea' is: tengeri
So if you see something in a allergy phrase book with that word you're on the right track.

Just a note to those of you who have nut allergies. It is VERY COMMON for restaurants to have crepes with walnuts (dios palacsinta) and many deserts have walnuts in them. So, steer clear of of the desert menu - as there is a good likelihood of cross contamination.

IMPORTANT Update

Hey folks,

I'm now in Hungary - visiting friends... and asked about the general word for 'nuts' last night.

While they couldn't agree on what the one all encompassing word for Nuts is I was INCORRECT in saying that it was "Diok"

Diok is simply the plural of Walnuts. (which i mentioned and still handy to know - but since we're dealing with your health and well being - I don't want to be the one steering you wrong)

But since nuts are seeds in a hard shell - Magok is the plural of seeds.

So - to be safe - name your nuts by name. (see earlier post)

More Translation

Okay - after having a good long discussion with a few more people here.... I finally have a translation for nut.

Csonthejasok - literally translated back "those with hard skins"

OR Csonthejos Gyumolcsok "Fruits with hard shells"

And seafood:

Tegeri Gyumolcsok "Fruits of the Sea aka Fruits de Mer" - which all makes sense

Tegeri Halok "Fish of the Sea" though I'm not sure what other kind of fish there are.

Rakok - are collectively a group of sea food like shrimp, crayfish to lobster - but don't include all shell fish. (literally translated back "cancers" - like the sign cancer)
