How does this go?

I would like to take part in the code sprint (mainly because I've never done this before). Could someone enlighten me as to how this goes? I have no project proposals, but would be really happy to join a group working on a project.

Just come to the code sprint. There will be people helping you with important core issues to review, bugs to work on. You could dive into helping update drupal.org to Drupal 6, fixing tests for Drupal 7, writing documentation. Whatever you choose and can contribute to the community, we'd love to have you in there. Addison Berry is coordinating the doc sprint, and I assume there will be quite a few people with bright ideas on the code sprint part.
