should be visible to roommates
The room should be visible to whoever you enter in one of the roommate fields (the room is not unpublished, but permissions are restricted to it to the room owner (to edit and view) and roommates (to view). We hide the rooms, since otherwise people could just walk through and see who is staying where, on what dates and with whom. Which would not be too good to expose :)
Roommates also see what room they are marked a roommate for on their registration status page within the top area of the page.

Will that work for potential
Will that work for potential roommates -- if someone is interested in sharing but would like to see the room details, can I add them without that being permanent?
remember removing them
Just remember removing them after they have seen the room.
